How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different connector pins and they serve different purposes but the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine with no sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car is able to start if the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is plugged in however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows a temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've all other possibilities out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump
